True or False?

  1. If you pick up a baby bird that’s fallen to the ground, the parents will abandon it.

FALSE- Most birds don’t have that great of smell, and even if they did they would not abandon their baby because you touched it. If you do find a baby bird on the ground, if it’s safe (no cats or other predators) leave it be, the parents will coax it back to the tree. Or if you can safely put it back in the nest, go for it. The armless parents will be grateful.

2.Chlorine Bleach is the best thing to clean hummingbird feeders?

TRUE! Cleaning them with soap and water can leave a residue and even a microscopic amount will kill a hummer. Use bleach, as all residue evaporates.

  1. It’s better to give hummingbirds honey as that’s closer to their natural food source.

False– there is bacteria in honey or any non-white sugar, that is deadly to hummingbirds.

4.  It’s okay to take in any wild animal you find in the woods and make them a pet?

False- There is actually a Federal Law that states you cannot take wild animals from nature, without the proper license. This to protect humans and animals. Animals look all cute and cuddly, until they grow up. And in the case of turtles they outlive humans. Once you take a wild animal home, if you take it back to the woods after a time, it will die.
